Teaching your family how to handle a life insurance claim

By Compuquotes Team on March 27th, 2008

No one likes to think about what will happen to their family if they pass away, but it's important to keep this in mind in case you decide that life insurance could help them to get by. There needs to be more to the process than just buying the insurance, however; you should make sure that they know about your insurance policy and take the time to work through what they'll need to do to file a life insurance claim. This will ensure that they're familiar with the process so that it won't become an additional burden if they have to deal with the loss of you as well.

  • Introduce them to your agent

The first thing that you should do is introduce your spouse or other family members to your life insurance agent. This will not only help your family to be familiar with your agent but will also give your agent a chance to be more familiar with your family. While life insurance agents generally try to be as helpful as possible to the families of deceased clients, having that added familiarity can make the process of filing a life insurance claim much easier. It will help the family to feel as though the agent is someone that they can trust instead of just being a person who's doing his job so that he can get the claim over with. Especially in the highly emotional times during which life insurance claims must be made, this added touch can make a large difference.

  • Make sure that they're familiar with your policy

You (or you and your agent) should sit down with your spouse or other family members and go through all of the details of your life insurance policy. This will help to make sure that they understand exactly what the policy covers and if there are any limitations on the policy that they should know about when they have to file a claim. Having the explanation happen with your life insurance agent can be very beneficial, as they will most likely have more working knowledge of the insurance policy than you do and will be able to answer any questions that your family might have that you never would have thought to ask.

  • Ask your life insurance provider about any specifics

Once you or your agent has explained the policy and who they should contact if they have to file a claim, try and make sure that there is an open line of communication between your family and your life insurance provider if they need additional information. Sometimes specific questions don't come to mind until later, so you should be willing to either ask your insurance agent or let your family members talk to the agent so that these questions can be answered. This will help to ensure that your family has all of the information that they need in case they have to file a life insurance claim, and may also lead to you learning more about your policy and the claim process as well.
